The Worst Way to Choose a Career

The Problem

My clients tell me that they have gone into a career for a lot of the wrong reasons:

  • They did what their parents or peers suggested
  • They were good at something at school and thought it would make a good career
  • They thought that the career would bring them lots of money and that the wealth would be enough ~ later they find it isn't
  • They wanted prestige, status and all that went with it
  • They drifted into a career for one reason or another, that had little to do with choice
  • They thought it would be a 'secure' area to be in

And the list goes on. I am sure that you could add your own reasons in here, and for some people this works out just fine. For the majority though, it doesn't and many people end up discontented and dissatisfied in roles that just don't suit them.

As we grow and develop, we can also grow out of a career, even one we once loved and this can be scary.

In today's uncertain times, people are also losing jobs that they were quite happy with and are facing the prospect of looking for a new one. Or maybe that redundancy was just what you wanted!

Whatever the reason that you are facing a career or job change, the WORST thing that you can do is to hit the classifieds in the papers and on the internet if you don't really know what you are looking for.

If you don't know what you are looking for, and if you are lucky enough to secure a job this way (most people don't), you could be in the same or even a worse situation than before.

The Solution

It is so important to do a career and personal assessment so that you make the right choice for you. In the process, you will also learn how to re-create this process if you ever need to go through it again. This will happen for many people in the constantly changing world of work and with our changing needs. You can also gain 'lifelong employability' skills to support you in this.

For career changers and job seekers and for those who just aren't happy and satisfied with what they are doing, it is important to get clear on:

  • What you want to do
  • Why you want to do it
  • What skills you prefer to use and how they will fit a particular role
  • Where you like to use those skills
  • What sort of people you prefer to work with
  • What environment helps you to be at your most effective
  • Your personal style and how that fits in with your chosen career

Once you have chosen the right career for you, Tina will give you the job search strategies to improve your chances of getting that job.

There are many books, articles and online resources available to assist you with this and some people make successful career choices this way. For most people though, an experienced and qualified guide can shorten the process and make it more focused.

Now you can receive career coaching services both in person and online:

  • By meeting with a coach in person
  • By communicating with a coach in the comfort of your own home or office (all you need is access to the internet and a phone)
  • By completing online assessments and receiving comprehensive reports.

Tina offers a suite of in person and online career assessment tools to help you make successful career transitions. She will guide you through the career development process in person, online, or a combination of these.

If you would like to start or grow your own business, but are not sure if you would be suited to this or how to go about it most effectively, you can also look at your entrepreneurial style to make some informed decisions.
